If high-quality, durable soft goods is something you seek, then you are probably looking for something made from Egyptian cotton. You probably already own something of that nature that you're not even aware of as it's used to make such a diverse range of products these days.

You'll find Egyptian cotton in bed sheets, bathrobes, shirts, tablecloths, stuffed animals, jackets, sleeping bags, and even towels to name just a few soft goods that are being produced. And why not? Most of the higher end items that claim to be soft and super and luxurious and it touches your body, the better it feels the more likely you are to buy it.

This holds true with Egyptian cotton bath towels as well as the softer they are and the more water they absorb, the better they'll be for you.

What is Egyptian cotton?

Well, as if you couldn't guess just by the name, Egyptian cotton comes from Egypt, duh! It's actually a native cotton that was transplanted there back some time ago from North American stock. The good thing about it is that the humid conditions and extremely rich soil in Egypt gave the crops perfect conditions for great growing seasons. The problem was that a lot of the British textile makers soon started using that instead of the native crops.

There's a couple characteristics of Egyptian cotton that we need to make note of. This variation of cotton grows particularly long fibers (or staples). In fact, they are actually classified as an extra-long staple cotton (ELS). Yeah, but what does all that mean to me? Well, glad you asked. These fibers are close to being twice as long as regular cotton fibers. This allows the manufacturers to spin them down into some very fine yarns. The finer the yarns, the more soft, strong and durable they'll be.

Another GREAT quality of Egyptian cotton is that it can really take the dye's due to it's super absorbency. This allows manufacturer's to really produce some high-quality, very colorful products that typically won't fade and last much, much longer than other standard cotton products.

Where can you get 100% Egyptian cotton bath towels?

Towels, towels, everywhere there are towels. But to get the good ones you gotta make it a quest. A journey to find the best towels at what you are willing to pay for them. Knowing that, there are a ton of places you can pick up these 100 percent Egyptian cotton towels. Let's start with the physical stores first.

Offline home furnishings stores are abundant and most all of them carry towels. How many of these places can you name? Ok, I'll start. At the top of the line you can get them from really name brand stores like Macy's, Neiman Marcus or Bloomingdales. I don't typically shop at any of those though as I think you can get the same quality at a much lower price. But I will peruse during some of their annual sales. Next is your other department stores like JC Penney's and Sears. Both have some very nice towel collections. A little further down the list you got the specialty stores like Bed, Bath and Beyond. 3B might surprise you when it comes to their towel selection, it was definitely more than I thought they had. And of course, your superstores like Target and Walmart. You can't forget them, even though you probably already go there for your everyday items, you can sometimes pickup some quality towels as well just keep a look out.

As for online, I'm a bit more partial to this and have found myself doing a lot more online shopping than I'd ever thought I'd do. One word of note, I will not buy towels from eBay, there are simply to many other choices out there and I just don't trust buying a hygienic item off of there. Now my two favorite places to shop for towels online is Amazon and JC Penney's. Amazon is just massive and they have a ton of different items and sellers on there. I know I already called out JC Penney's on the offline branch, but, their online shopping experience is really nice. If you know what you are looking for those would be the two places that I checked out to price shop before I went anywhere else.

What To Look For In Egyptian Cotton Bath Towels?

You're probably saying now, yeah, all this is great but I still really don't know what to look for to ensure that I'm getting a soft Egyptian cotton bath towel? Well, let's take a gander at that.

Right off the bat, you need to look to see just what percentage of Egyptian cotton is being used in the towel. I know, shocker! But there are some brands out there that tout Egyptian cotton only to find out that it's made of only 30-40% of that material. If you are looking for the softest ones, always go with 100% Egyptian cotton towels.

The next thing to look for is the GSM count. GSM simply means the grams per square meter. It's a fairly standard measurement that guages both the weight and the quality of the cotton being used for the towels. Plus, in organic cotton towels, it gives you an idea of just how dense the material is. One thing to note is that towels usually range from around 300 to over 800 GSM's. On this number, higher is always better. It means that not only will it be soft, but it'll be absorbent as well to get that water off your body. What I've seen as kind of the "standard" softness/absorbancy factor is a little over 600 GSM's. Anything bigger, should be better.
