What to get dad for father's day?
61My daddy! He's always been one of the hardest men to shop for ever. If you ever asked him what he wanted for his birthday or father's day you would always get the same answer:
"I don't need anything"
But this time of year is not about a "need". It's about showing the man who brought you into this world, cared for you, provided for you and made sure you had everything you'd ever need that you love him, you listened to him and you care for him.
This can be done a multitude of different ways, sometimes nothing more than a phone call or simple "I love you" would suffice, but it's my determination to make this year's father's day a bit different than the last. This year's theme is going to be all around his favorite things, golf and steak!
What to get dad for father's day:
My daddy's a golfer. My dad also has a sweet tooth. So this year he's going to get the best of both worlds.
I'm going to get him a golf gift basket to start things off with that'll hopefully have some chocolate goodies inside.
If not, I'll just add some of his favorites.
Plus, I'll probably throw in a good golfing coffee table book for him to look at and drool over for a while.
Father's Day Golf Gear
Don't even get me started to talk to you about golf because if I did, I would only be lying. Seriously, I know nothing about it, but it is fun to get out there with my dad and swing at it a time or two.
Yep, my dad's a big golfer, always has been. We don't go together that much anymore, but when I was littler, he used to get me up on Sunday mornings and we'd go hit a round at least once a month.
I never could get into it, it would always take me like 15 times to get up there but he was always the encourager!
I couldn't tell you whether or not these are good because I had to call my mom and ask her today what he wanted, but this is what she told me to get him. The Callaway Diablo driver and a set of Warbird golf balls. Personally, they all sound kind of devilish to me.
But that's what she told me. Give a man a good stick and a couple of balls and you'll make him happy forever. She's pretty silly if you ask me.
No Father's Day Cards
One of the things I stopped doing a long time ago was shelling out the bucks to Hallmark for a card that cost about $5.00, was around for a week or two and then tossed away never to be seen again. That's when I vowed never again to get my dad another father's day card. Instead, I picked up on these great Father's Day card alternatives.
It got to be where I just couldn't stand it anymore. Why spend that kind of money (I know it's not a lot) for something that was going to be read and tossed.
Instead, I started picking him up these little books, I'd take the first page or two and write my own card and memories on them and give him this instead. All I can say is he loves them and they are all still around on his bookshelf and in his office at work.
They have meaning to him, give him a sense of purpose and are little cherished memories he can pick up and enjoy time and again. The funny thing is, he always seems to find something in there that relates to us in some way or another. Makes him laugh and smile and you can see the big guy melt a few degree's when he's reading them.

I love my daddy! And there's 2 days a year that I'll go the extra mile to show him all that love and support that he's given me throughout my entire life. His birthday and Father's day. I always try to do something special for him on those days.
For his birthday last year I made him a homemade birthday cake, you don't see that much anymore with the hustle and bustle of today's lives. Instead it's all store bought. So I mixed in a little love and some good chocolate icing, only 1 candle though for the #1 dad (didn't want to start a fire, J/K!!). Plus, I fixed up a special batch of my world famous spaghetti and garlic bread (don't tell him it's just Ragu with a couple extra cans of ingredients, he doesn't know the difference!) and we sat down to a good meal and wonderful conversation.
This year for father's day I think I'm going to take him out, a daddy date night if you will, just he and I, for a huge steak and potato dinner over at Salt Grass steak house. He loves that place. Plus, gonna throw in a couple rounds of golf for him to enjoy on his days off inside his new book/card!
I love you dad! (Now please don't look at this till father's day)

Very interesting hub on Father's Day. I like your idea of not spending the money on a card. Your idea shows thought and as you say it is an awful waste to see it thrown out after a few weeks. The little books idea is a much better alternative
